Design & Display

This laptop maintains a simplistic profile throughout its design. The top cover is crafted from aluminum and looks premium from every angle. The hinge design is durable, and I had no issue folding and unfolding the laptop. It’s lightweight and robust at the same time. The silver finish on aluminum is classy and holds up pretty well against scratches.

It features a 15.6-inch display with 1080p resolution and IPS capabilities. Watching movies on the go is a delight on this laptop, and the screen remains ever so vivid and sharp all the time. It has excellent color production and is visible under direct sunlight as well.

CPU & GPU

It features the 3rd Generation AMD Ryzen 3 3200U CPU. It’s a dedicated mobile processor with ultra-low power consumption. It features staggering performance, albeit consuming less than 150watts of power. This guarantees an exceptional battery backup of up to 7 hours.

For graphics, it has AMD Radeon Vega 3 GPU, which is designed for casual gaming, video editing, and other productivity tasks. You won’t have any issue playing AAA titles from the past five years on this laptop. This GPU can handle them all.

Storage and RAM

It features 128 GB SSD as the primary storage option; however, you can upgrade it in the future to accommodate more data. It has 4GB of DDR4 RAM, which may sound less, but it gets the job done. The fast SSD helps with the caching, which makes the entire RAM available to the user.

Connectivity

It has all the necessary ports you’d expect on a gaming laptop. It comes with USB 3.1, USB 2.0, and HDMI slots. For wireless connectivity, it has a 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi module. I never had any network related issues with it, and the ping remained low.

It runs Windows 10 S mode out of the box. This is a streamlined version of Windows that is designed to run Microsoft Store only apps. It can be disabled and standard Windows can be installed.

It is one of the best budget gaming laptops available right now. AMD Radeon Vega can handle almost all kinds of intensive graphical tasks with ease. RAM and SSD can be upgraded to make it future proof.

Design and Display

At first glance, this laptop has the gamer vibes all over it. The red accent mixed with black is a treat to eyes. The keyboard joins the color scheme with red-backlit design. The overall build quality of this laptop is solid, and cooling remains efficient as well. I never had any heat issues with this laptop.

It has a 15-inch FHD IPS screen with relatively thicker bezels. Bezels aren’t an issue for most of us gamers since we prefer quality over aesthetics. The viewing angles on this screen are great.

CPU and GPU

Nitro 5 comes with the 9th Generation Intel i5 Processor. It can handle all your gaming and editing needs with ease. It has Intel SpeedStep technology enabled by default, which allows it to scale down the CPU clock and conserve the battery.

This laptop performs really well in the graphics department as well. It features NVIDIA GTX 1650, which is capable of running most triple AAA titles at 1080p and 60 fps.

Storage and RAM

It has a 512GB solid-state drive installed; however, one M.2 slot comes empty, which can mainly be used to upgrade the storage in the future. It also features 8GB of DDR4 RAM that is also upgradeable.

Connectivity and Features

It has one USB 3.1 Type C port, two USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI port, which supports 4k 60fps. It has Acer CoolBoost technology; it makes sure that the laptop never goes above a set threshold and works without any CPU throttle.

The hinge featured on this laptop isn’t meant to be used casually, it can cause interference with its folding mechanism which will eventually require a repair.

GTX 1650 is still a spectacular performer when it comes to gaming. Acer Nitro 5 incorporates all the hardware required to run most games with a decent frame rate. If you’re looking for a laptop that can be upgraded easily, then Acer Nitro 5 might be the choice for you.

Design and Display

MSI are well-known for their gaming peripherals; this laptop inherits the same DNA as other MSI products. The design looks inspired by the Alienware lineup but has quirks of its own. A red MSI logo is featured on the top cover. It features two vents to allow streamlined airflow.

The screen featured on this laptop is arguably one of the best screens on this list. There’s virtually no ghosting of any kind, which is pretty apparent in LCD displays. It comes with an FHD 15 inch IPS panel.

CPU and GPU

9th Generation Intel Core i5 9300H is the CPU featured on this laptop. This CPU, despite being a generation older than current offerings, holds up really well and offers spectacular performance with low power consumption.

GTX 1650 is on the older side, but still, most of the AAA titles and e-sports titles run at 60 fps with ease.

Connectivity and Feature

It features USB 3.1 Type C port and a USB 3.1 port. The type C port can be used to connect it with a plethora of devices with ease. It features Bluetooth 4.0 and 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity.

It features MSI’s Cooler Boost 5, which makes use of both vents to maximize airflow.

Storage and RAM

It comes with an 8GB DDR4 memory that can be upgraded. For storage, it has a 256 GB SSD, which is plenty for the casual audience.

The build quality of the keys isn’t great. However, one can always invest in a gaming keyboard. The keys on this laptop catch dust easily, and it can be quite hard to clean them.

MSI never fails to impress when it comes to gaming products. This laptop is no exception. It’s truly one of the best gaming laptops in the budget. If you want a solid performer that can play most games out there and still be portable, then this might be the choice for you.

Design and Display

Acer pursued its minimalist design approach with Acer Swift 3. The lightweight and thin aluminum chassis paired with a black plastic display frame and shiny matte Acer logo on the back make it more simple. The laptop weighs 2.7 pounds and 15.6-inch size, making the machine extremely portable. Coming to the keyboard, it has a fingerprint scanner and chiclet keys. The keys are spaced well, and for better visibility, it is backlit with white LEDs. The trackpad responds well and is the right size. Moreover, it handled quite well in games like Civilization VI, but you will need a gamepad or separate mouse for other games.

It features a 15.6″ Full HD IPS display. The IPS panel has fair viewing angles. The brightness levels on this laptop are low even on the maximum brightness. I couldn’t work outdoors with this laptop.

CPU and GPU

Swift 3 has AMD Ryzen 7 processor. I challenged this laptop with 20 Google chrome tabs and four YouTube pages playing 1080p videos. While this laptop sat on the chair and secretly whispered, “that’s all you’ve got?”

Not only that, but I opened docs and started typing, and I was surprised that this laptop was still speedy and smooth. It’s AMD Radeon RX 540 GPU produced 79 frames per second in my favorite game, Dirt 3. It averaged above 45 FPS for most games out there with reduced settings.

Connectivy

Acer has loaded up the Swift 2 with a USB 3.0, a USB 2.0, and a USB-C Thunderbolt three port as well as a mic/headphone jack and an HDMI port. A typical Ultrabook these days don’t have an optical drive and an SD card reader, so the same goes for this system.

Storage and RAM

Swift 3 has storage of 512GB SSD; meanwhile, the laptop is equipped with 8GB of RAM. It handled all the multimedia content creation quite well. Loading up photo editing apps like Photoshop with many other files opened in the background all worked very smoothly without any hangups.

The built-in mic and webcam, neither are suitable for professional YouTube broadcasting or twitch streaming or anything related to that. However, they are functional but not useful.

The Acer Swift 3 is a solid, reliable laptop, which stands out in a crowd. The computer is a portable workhorse and can easily handle multimedia tasks. It can play most esports titles with ease and falls under your budget as well.

PROS
  • Slim and stylish metal chassis.
  • Excellent battery life.
  • Runs quietly.
  • High system performance.
CONS
  • Extremely dim display.
  • No memory card reader.

  • Vega 8 is industry-grade GPU.
  • Ryzen 5 CPU.
  • 12 GB of RAM.
  • Upgradeable SSD.
CONS
  • Bulky Build.
  • 900p Display.

Design and Display

The Asus TUF FX505DT comes with an angular design paired perfectly with the monitor. The design is quite simple, with a black paint job and ASUS logo printed on the lid. Just like its predecessors, it has a red color scheme present on the keyboard. The chiclet keyboard is well spaced for fast and easy typing accompanying a full number pad. The WASD keys are outlined in white color for proper visibility.

Whenever you think of a budget laptop, a thought that always crosses your mind is the compromises that come with it. The screen is the one that still suffers. Surprisingly this laptop has managed to add a full HD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1920 X 1080 resolution. It gives you the clarity that is always found in laptops on the expensive side.

CPU and GPU

The AMD Ryzen 5 CPU is accompanied by Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU. GTX 1650 might be considered to be an older GPU, but it still holds up well in most games. This laptop is capable enough to handle modern games at 1080p medium settings.

Connectivity and Features

The laptop is loaded with a USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI output, a power jack, a headphone jack, and an Ethernet port. Everything is placed on the left side except the Kensington lock slot, which is present on the right side. USB Type-C port and an SD card reader are absent on this laptop.

ASUS has incorporated its anti-dust technology on this laptop. It prevents the vents from clogging and ensures the system runs smoothly.

Storage and RAM

The laptop has 256GB PCIe SSD storage and a pre-installed 8GB RAM. All these elements are great for productivity. You can open 15 chrome tabs, stream videos, keep the spreadsheets open, and this machine will handle everything. However, you can always add more RAM to increase multitasking capabilities.

Battery life is never good in gaming laptops, and ASUS TX505DT is not different either. The battery on this laptop lasted only for 4 hours of normal usage. It includes continuously watching videos and web browsing at 150 nits brightness.

The gamers who want to spend little money on a gaming laptop, yet they want an incredible laptop that can handle modern games at 1080p more easily than the ASUS TUF FX505DT is a definite choice.

PROS
  • 120Hz refresh rate.
  • Compact and lightweight gaming laptop.
  • Good quality built-in speakers.
  • Spacious keyboard.
CONS
  • Below average battery life.
  • Can Be Noisy If Under Load .

Design and Display

Simplicity in the overall design is the best part of this laptop due to its sleek and subdued design. The body of this laptop is mostly made of plastic. But at no point, it felt cheap. The keyboard in this laptop provides precise pressure points and short travel. Besides having a full-fledged numeric pad, it also has a monochrome keyboard backlighting that glows in two colors. The settings can be changed by using the software on the laptop.

The full HD screen is my minimum requirement from budget gaming laptops these days, and the Lenovo L340 fulfills my need. It has a 15.6inch IPS HD screen. The IPS panel gives the best viewing colors and angles.

CPU and GPU

The L340 has Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU. The GTX 1650 won’t catch much attention, but surprisingly it does have the ability to run games like CS: GO and Fortnite while hitting 90+ FPS.

Supporting the GPU is the 9th generation Intel Core i5. It is a reliable processor that promises performance for FHD games. Meanwhile, substantial performance and video editing will be slow. However, the i5 is still enough for multitasking, which includes viewing streams/discord and switching between games all at once.

Storage and RAM

The fast 512GB NVMe SSD will quickly get you into the game, and provide faster loading times and boot times. Game downloads are covering plenty of space each day, which is why this laptop has 512GB storage, which is quite a decent size. You’ll be golden if you get an external HDD for running games.

The 8GB of DDR4 ram is good, but I believe that 16GB is preferable. However, this laptop has only one RAM slot, so if you want to upgrade the 8GB to 16GB, you will have to get rid of 8GB to make space for a 16 GB RAM stick.

Connectivity and Features

The IdeaPad gaming laptop has all the necessary ports present on the left side of the laptop. It does not have a memory card reader nor a thunderbolt port. It has a USB Type-C port, but you can’t use it to charge the laptop.

The laptop has Dolby audio technology for audio to give the users an extraordinary audio experience. The technology brings out the clear, crisp sound without that horrible echoing audio, which usually comes from laptops of this price range.

The trackpad on this laptop is good for nothing. Intense pressure must be applied to the bottom corners of the trackpad to make the mouse buttons work. Moreover, the surface is quite resistant to the fingers, which makes navigation difficult.

This laptop comes under the category of the best gaming laptop under $900. Besides that, it has “decent” everything; Graphics card, CPU, 512 SSD, 8GB RAM, and IPS display for a great gaming session.

PROS
  • Decent gaming performance at this range.
  • Matte IPS panel.
  • Bright display with perfect contrast.
  • Backlit keyboard.
CONS
  • No memory card reader.
  • Below average WiFi speed.

8.

Asus TUF FX705DY - Gaming Predator

  • Anti dust technology with Dual Fans.

  • AMD Ryzen 5- 3550H CPU.
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM and 1 TB HDD.

Design and Display

The laptops in this era tend to look like a spaceship, but ASUS has chosen a classic design for this laptop. With a red ASUS logo on the lid and a red keyboard backlight. It has a plastic chassis which doesn’t feel cheap at all. The keyboard has a classic gamer red backlighting, and the highlighted WASD is quite helpful for the gamers. The trackpad is good for most basic tasks, but it is recommended to get a mouse with it.

The laptop has a 17inch IPS display with 60Hz refresh rate and 1920 × 1080 resolution. The screen has an anti-glare finish and great viewing angles.

CPU and GPU

Powering the machine is an AMD Ryzen 5 twinned with an AMD Radeon RX 560X. Both of these elements are good for beginners. The performance is also good for beginners but not recommended for pro gamers. The fans of this laptop are not loud or annoying and at no point GPU or CPU throttle.

Storage and RAM

Packed with 8GB RAM and a 512GB PCIe SSD, this laptop handled almost everything I threw at it. Not only for once, this laptop stutters. I had 20 chrome tabs opened, and 5 of them were playing videos on 1080p. Moreover, a game was downloading in the back while I was web browsing.

Connectivity and Features

All the ports on this system are found on the left side, which is good if you want to use a mouse on the alternative side. It has one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.1 for Gen 1, 1 RJ45 LAN port, one combo headphone jack, 1 HDMI 2.0 port, and a Kensington lock on the right.

It comes with Desktop Grade AMD FreeSync technology, it works surprisingly well to eliminate ghosting in games.

Everything was going smoothly until I realized that the CPU is always working at 100%, which means that the CPU is a bottleneck on this laptop.

This laptop guarantees extreme performance while remaining within budget. It houses decent gaming capabilities; it can handle most games out there with tinkered settings.

PROS
  • Decent gaming keyboard.
  • Good quality plastic chassis.
  • Excellent performance and cooling thermals.
  • RX560X Can Handle Anything.
CONS
  • Below average mousepad.
  • Poor battery life.
  • Slow hard drive.

MSI GF65 - One Word 'Spectacular'

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX1660Ti 6GB GDDR6.
  • 9th Generation Core i7 CPU.
  • 512 GB m.2 SSD and 8GB DDR4 RAM.
  • Cooler Boost 3 Technology for airflow.
  • Thin and Classy Design.

Design and Display

The laptop is moderately thin and lightweight. The combination of aluminum and plastic body is not appealing, but the purpose of the lid is well served. The keyboard is spaced well, and you don’t have to throw your muscle power to write a single sentence. The surface of each key is large, which is less prone to typos.

On the other hand, RGB lovers might be disappointed with only one backlit option. i.e.: red. The trackpad is just like any other gaming laptop, usable but not great. Windows precision touchpad drivers give the finger gesture and tracking register without any issue.

Open the lid, and you will find out the 15.6 full HD display surrounded by narrow side bezels. Due to the conventional design, the webcam and microphone are placed on top. The display has sharp and bright colors with a refresh rate of 144Hz.

CPU and GPU

The gaming performance on this laptop is quite decent. It is equipped with intel core i7-9750H accompanied by Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660. Everything is paired up nicely without leading any huge bottlenecking to each other.

GTX 1660 runs most games capped at 60 FPS with ease, however, you might have to lower some settings in games to put less strain on the aging GPU.

Storage and RAM

The laptop is preoccupied with the Kingston 512GB NVMe SSD. Meanwhile, the RAM is a factory installed with 8GB. The gaming was smooth on this laptop; however, don’t expect to do intensive gaming on this laptop. However, while gaming, I also pulled Netflix, disney+ and Spotify, and MSI GF65 handled everything well.

Connectivity and Features

The main ports are mostly on the right side. The ports on the right include; 2x USB Type-A, 2x USB Type-C, Gigabit Ethernet, 3.5mm combo jack. The left side has an HDMI and a barrel charging port.

It incorporates MSI’s CoolerBoost technology to maintain efficient airflow. I never had any issues with it overheating at all.

The laptop is fitted with GTX 1660 since it is more demanding. Due to the upgraded GPU, MSI has improved the cooling system to turn the heat down. However, the noise of the fans is always present no matter what you are doing on this laptop, which is quite annoying.

The Laptop weighs only 1.86kg packed only with authentic features and performance. While there are many better options on the market, this laptop still comes under the category of best gaming laptops under $1000.

PROS
  • Quick 120 Hz refresh rate.
  • full-size arrow keys.
  • lightweight for its class.
CONS
  • Fan noise is constant, No silent mode.
  • No G-sync or HDMI 2.0 options.

10.
Monster Unleashed

Asus TUF Fx505GT - Monster Unleashed

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5 GPU.
  • 9th Generation Intel Core i7-9750h Processor.
  • Anti-Dust Technology.
  • MIL-STD-810 military standard construction.
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD and 8GB DDR4 RAM.

Check Price on Amazon

Design and Display

The design of this laptop is all plastic except the aluminum lid. Even though it looks sturdier, it is durable as compared to other options. There is nothing special about the design that rings bells.

However, the keyboard is quite decent, with an ample amount of spacing and a full-sized keyboard. The WASD keys have a white paint job to make them visible. The keys have only one RGB backlighting.

The trackpad on this system has windows precision drivers. Fingers glide smoothly on this laptop due to the matte surface. You can even play FPS games using the trackpad, but you will need an external mouse for a competitive gaming session.

The display of this laptop is 15.6 full HD IPS with a 144Hz refresh rate. The screen has excellent viewing angles and can be adjusted fairly easily without much work. You can watch movies, play games, and edit your stuff on this screen easily.

CPU and GPU

It features a 9th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU, which is really efficient at conserving battery power and remains cool most of the time. It is paired with NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB, together they perform really well, and I never faced any bottleneck with it.

Games like Fortnite and CS: Go can reach 120+FPS easily on max settings. However, newer titles might suffer a bit.

Storage and RAM

It has plenty of storage and features 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD and 8GB DDR4 RAM. Both of them can be upgraded easily, allowing the laptop to become future proof.

Connectivity and Features

Keep in mind that if you are someone who needs plenty of ports, then this laptop is not for you. All the ports on this laptop are present on the left side; an HDMI port, 1 USB 2.0 Type-A, 2 USB 3.2 Gen-1 type-1, one combo audio jack, 1 RJ-45 port.

Anti-Dust technology works really well in keeping dust out of the vents; most laptop owners complain about dust clogging in their cooling vents; however, that won’t be an issue with this laptop.

The placement of arrow keys is quite questionable on this laptop. The top arrow key hangs on the lowermost section of the keyboard while other arrow keys are lower. You can easily hit the 0 or Ctrl key because of the placement of arrows.

Asus TUF Fx505GT is a powerful gaming laptop aimed at casual gamers. Considering the hardware inside, it comes in at an affordable price, essentially making it one of the best budget gaming laptops.

PROS
  • Thin aesthetic Chassis.
  • SSD and RAM are upgradeable.
  • Anti-Dust Technology.
  • Nanoedge Display.
CONS
  • Hinge doesn’t open all the way.
  • Can be noisy at times.

Budget Gaming Laptop
Buyers Guide

Finding the best budget gaming laptop sounds like an easy task, but it is not.

There are a lot of things you must consider before buying a gaming laptop. To make a well-informed decision below is a simple guide that will help you find the best budget gaming laptop.

best Budget Gaming Laptop 2020

GPU

The graphics processing unit, also known as GPU, is the most crucial element that differentiates between non-gaming and gaming laptops. This piece of technology decides the performance of your gaming laptop while gaming. If you are into multiplayer and action games, then you cannot compromise in the GPU. GPU is responsible for supplying the graphics and power for modern gaming.

Most gaming laptops have a dedicated GPU, that is enough to handle most esports titles like Fortnite and CS: GO.

CPU

The CPU is the heart of the laptop. Many Laptop manufacturers fit in the low processor to extend the battery life, which is why desktop computers have the best processors.

I recommend buying the latest AMD or Intel and don’t go for anything older than Intel 8th Gen Core or AMD 2nd Gen Ryzen.

Display

The games are all about the visual experience. Most budget gaming laptops don’t come equipped with 4K or OLED screens. You’ll be lucky if your panel supports 120Hz refresh rates.  That is why the minimum resolution should be 1080p.

15 to 17 inches is the ideal display size for a gaming laptop, but you can also go for 14 or 18-inch options. Keep this in mind that the bigger screen means extra weight.

Storage and RAM

Most modern gaming laptops have shifted towards SSD drives in order to maximize performance. 256GB and 512GB SSD drives in laptops are common; however, if you’re looking to boost productivity and store more games, then search for the laptop that has an empty M.2 or SATA slot.

For RAM, the bare minimum should be 8GB, anything below that can hinder your system’s performance by miles.
