HBO is working to bring the award-winning Sony’s exclusive, The Last of Us, into a TV series, and the hype on the internet is blowing off the roof.
As most video game adaptations don’t work out as expected, HBO has taken extra measures to ensure that Last of us fans will love the series, by involving Neil Druckmann in writing and executive production. Neil Druckmann is the writer and creative director of Last of Us and its sequel, The Last of Us 2.
Neil Druckmann also expressed his excitement, stating that he can’t believe he gets to work with his favorite director in bringing Joel and Ellie’s story to HBO. For all the fans, that isn’t all as we have another good news!
The person leading the adaptation is none other than Craig Mazin, who is responsible for bringing HBO’s critically acclaimed drama Chernobyl. He seems perfect for the job as The Last of Us takes in a post-apocalyptic world, one which the Chernobyl director is not unfamiliar to. This isn’t his only video game project either as he is working on a film version of the Borderland games, with director Eli Roth. The place of executive producer will be filled in by Evan Wells, Naughty Dog’s president, and also HBO’s Carolyn Strauss.
If you have been under a rock and don’t know what The Last of Us is all about, don’t worry as we got you covered. The story revolves around Joel, who is a single father trying to make a living in a post-apocalyptic world. He accepts a gig that requires him to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, across a land plagued with a deadly infection that turns people into dead, mindless walking creatures. The two have a hard time living together as they have differences among themselves and take time to get along when they do understand each other; they are a force to be reckoned with.
The Naughty Dog’s title was a massive success since it was launched, having a very captivating story and in-depth characters. The game was, in fact, so popular that a film adaptation was in discussion in less than a year after the game was first released.
The game was exclusively released for Sony and it was a huge success. It was praised for its compelling narrative and characters, with talks of a film adaptation just some months after it was released. The film didn’t see much progress since 2016.
The sequel of the video game is released on 29 May 2020, under the title The Last of Us Part II.
